Whitey's Ice Cream in NorthPark Mall
Whitey's at NorthPark Mall has called it quits! To people not from the Quad Cities, it seems like a racist name but the company owner was nicknamed Whitey because of his blond hair and the company was established in 1933. My sister's first job was at Whitey's at another location. Its a delicious staple in our community and if you ever visit Davenport, Moline, or Rock Island, you should definitely try Whitey's! They even wear the old-timey paper hats and are dressed very neatly. But the Whitey's in the mall couldn't go on. The jewelry store right next to Whitey's is also empty now. Spencer's(Still open) is the brick to the right of Whitey's in this photo. Whitey's experienced temporary closures at multiple locations due the entire staff being compromised by Corona Virus. Governor Kim Reynolds refused to mandate masks and Whitey's employees (mostly teenagers and elderly) suffered the consequences.
