Fundy at Low Tide
“Resonance” is the single most responsible factor for the high tides in the Bay of Fundy. The depth and shape of the Bay of Fundy, and the moon’s gravity contribute to make the Bay of Fundy have high tides, but the single biggest factor is due to the size of the bay. Here’s why: “the tides are high in the Bay of Fundy because the size of the bay is just right to match the natural gravitational pushing cycle of the Moon that causes the tides.” www.bayfundy.net/science/hightides.html
Here the ocean enters and escapes from the Bay of Fundy, pushing 110 billion tons of water every 12 hours. This is equivalent to the combined total 24 hr flow of all the rivers of the world! www.bayfundy.net/science/hightides.html
The red mud seen in this photo is the bottom of the ocean and it will fill every 6 hours. The rate of tidal flow, or how quickly the change occurs between high and low tides, up to 17.0 m or the same as a 5-story building, in 6 hours, is astounding.
