Her Testimony

Darrow Called Her Imposter

Mrs. Tingley Tells of Attack on Her by Teacher

Different Version of Famous Drugging Narration

Theosophical Head Says He Repented of Violence

{By Direct Wire – Exclusive Dispatch}

San Diego, Feb. 7. – Mrs. Katherine Tingley, leader of the Point Loma Theosophical Society, told on the stand today of personal violence used on her by Dr. Fitz Sage Darrow, defendant in the Darrow divorce case, when she said, he put his arms about her and tried to force her to her knees saying, “You imposter, get down on your knees, you have separated me and my wife.”

Mrs. Tingley, relating her version of the occurrence at Point Loma the evening of October 5, when Dr. Darrow alleges he was held down by nine men and drugged, said that when Mr. Darrow acted so violently toward her it was while he was, in his own admission, under the influence of enemies of hers who had poisoned his mind.

The story of Mrs. Tingley differed entirely from that of Dr. Darrow. She said that Dr. Darrow was in an excited condition and that several of the men held him to quiet him and later Dr. Wood administered a hypodermic. Instead of her crying, “The blood, the blood,” as Dr. Darrow said, she said she told him the blood was all in his head and he would have apoplexy if he did not cool down.

She said:

“I recall a visit to the Darrow bungalow on the fourth. When I arrived Prof. Darrow seemed excited and said, “I want your help, K. T., I want a divorce. May has gone away frightened. I don’t know what to do nor what she is going to do.”

At The Cottage

In a later interview Mrs. Tingley said she urged him to go back to his wife and he intimated that if he went way it would precipitate something and if he stayed it also would have bad consequences. The occurrences in the Tyberg cottage the night of October 5 were then told by the theosophical leader.

“I saw him again in Mr. Tyberg’s bungalow. I recollect early in the evening I received a message from Prof. Darrow: “Please come over at once, I have much to say. Help me. You must promise to let me see Miss Pierce before I go.”

“I was seeing an attorney about a paper I was suing in Oakland,” continued Mrs. Tingley, “when I was called again by Mr. Knoche, who said: “It is very serious. Come at once and bring help. Mr. Darrow insists on seeing Miss Pierce.” I went to my auto.

“We went into the house. I went in and Prof. Darrow pushed in ahead. He commenced to talk excitedly. He put his arms around me and said: “I must see her.” Then as I pulled away he grasped me about the shoulder and tried to push me to my knees, saying: “Get down on your knees, you imposter, you have separated me from my wife.” I did not get on my knees. He caught me again and put his hands on my shoulders, then lifted his hands and rushed toward the door.”

“I called after him to quiet him and saw four men holding him to keep him from going downtown.”

This was objected to by Attorney Davis as a conclusion.

“It is not definite,” said Mrs. Tingley. “He came in again and tried to get away from those holding him, threw himself in front of me on the floor. The next recollection is seeing him on the couch and his friends holding him down.”

“I had rushed out to call for help. About that time Mrs. Darrow, very white, came in and I told her to stay, but she said ‘no’ and went out. Again he started after me, tried to catch me, and then Dr. Wood came. I said, “It will be all right.” The next was, I recall, the people holding him, one hand on his leg, another his hand, and I said, “Why don’t you relax.”

Blames Enemies

“In the morning when I saw him he said: “K. T., I have something to tell you. K. T., you have been my friend; I must tell you something that is on my conscience. Did I hurt you?” I told him that it was not Fritz last night and he said: “No, it wasn’t. I’ll tell who it was when I see you again.” I was called to his house again to see him and I took Mrs. Dunn with me. He said: “I must have that private talk. I remembered everything I did last night, K. T. I tried to take your life. I got so excited. All I said and did to you was but an echo of things poured into my ear by your enemies for months. I thought I would try to show you who was master. I thought I would put you on your knees and as I knew you had heart trouble I would crush you and take your life. They told me you would keep me if I started to go. They said you had many schemes, were an imposter and not to listen to your soft words any longer. I decided if I called you you would come and bring Miss Pierce and Mrs. Darrow as you did.”
