Uh-oh...
My entry for the Fig and a Vig category of the Wandering Skies 2024 competition.
-----------------------------------------------------
Cecil Throgmorton had always known he would rise up from the dust. Born into a large family on a small rock above the Florian Basin, he had been enthralled by flight since he first saw the sky. Not the plodding and sputtering flight of an airship, but the fluid, independent flight.
It had taken years of work. Years of failure. Years of patience. Years of watching the skrays in their majestic migrations and years of studying the latest engine designs. His years of hope had finally paid off.
On Tuesday, his latest design passed all his low-altitude tests. It could hover stably, maintain flight for over an hour, and land gently (at least gently enough).
He was finally ready to soar.
Wednesday morning, he burst through the clouds and greeted the open sky above.
But what was that clanking?
Uh-oh...
