Maitreya

Information provided by the museum states that this is a sculpture made from a material called gray schist. The size of the sculpture is 26 1/8 inches tall. The sculpture was provided by the Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund.

 

Information given from the museum states that it is the bodhisattva Maitreya. It is thought that Maitreya will reach enlightenment after the teachings of the Buddha have been forgotten so that he can spread the teachings again.

 

The sculpture is from the Kushan, Gandhara Indian Art collection from the Indian and Southeast Asian Art exhibit from the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is Public Domain.
