Magyar kikerics / Colchicum hungaricum

This flower originates from the West Balkans, however, today it has mostly disappeared. It lives only in two smallish areas in Central Eastern Europe. One of them is in Southern Hungary on a warm south-west facing lime-rich mountain slope.

The flower is about 20 cm tall and has white (or pale pink) flowers. It was the first protected wildflower in Hungary. It is so much appreciated that one of our coins bears this flower on its backside.

It usually blooms in February / March but sometimes - like this year - it opened its flowers in early January preceding even snowdrops.
