Spotty service

Long Key State Park, Florida: Railroad handcar remaining from the Long Key Fishing Camp days. At the beginning of the 20th C., Long Key was home to a fishing camp that was a favorite of the rich and famous and powerful, serviced by a railroad completed in 1912 as well as a miniature railroad that connected the docks to the hotel and camp bungalows. But it was all destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, never to be rebuilt, and the railroad was replaced by a highway as cars became the dominant form of transportation. Abandoned and long lost, sections of the camp railroad on Long Key were rediscovered as a result of the devastation from Hurricane Irma in 2017, and are now a part of the restoration project.
