Cleveland Museum of Art - A royal ram with a gold chain
A royal ram with a gold chain
This piece was created in 1585 AD with a border added likely around the 1700s in Mughal, India. It is a beautiful painting made with opaque watercolor and gold on paper. It now resides in the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift in honor of Madeline Neves Clapp in 2013. It is part of the Main Asian Rotation in Gallery 245. Such treatment of the animal could be seen as the Mughal rulers watching over various species out of scientific curiosity, as well as possibly wanting to show off their wealth. He has big tufts of wool on his back that have been dyed a deep orange color, his face and chest have black patterns, he wears a red collar with golden bells and tassels, and seems very calm in his green and teal grassy surroundings.
I highly recommend looking through the Cleveland Museum of Art's official page and virtual exhibit. In my experience of visiting it is much more detailed than this paragraph alone and holds so much more information to other pieces like this.
