Saturday 24 September 2022: Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) Yard Job makes a trip South out of Fairbanks Yard to serve University Of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). Here they are seen cutting away after dropping a cut of coal loads onto the spur so UAF can unload them.

UAF’s current coal plant started supplying all of the university’s heat and power in early 2020 making it one of the newest in the country. It had been under construction for five years and replaced the aging coal fired boilers that were becoming increasingly problematic. The plant receives coal from Healy AK at the Usibelli Coal Mine which serves a handful of other coal fired plants in the last frontier.

Today the crew is using 3007 a GP40-2 being built new in 1976 for the ARRC. After dropping the loads the crew would grab a string of empties on the other end of the siding before continuing back to the yard to do more work.
