Temptation of Buddha by the Evil Forces of Mara - 1971.18

This shrine sculpture of Buddha was created in Northern India sometime in the 700s AD. It is made of ivory with polychrome and gold and depicts the Buddha resisting the forces around him that would keep him from enlightenment. The piece was a purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund and is currently on display in the Himalayan exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This image is in the public domain.
