Vesperbild (Pietà) - 1971.67_web

Vesperbild (Pietà), by the Master of Grosslobming, is a painted cast stone depiction of Mary, Jesus’s mother, holding his dead body in her lap after he was crucified, but before his burial and resurrection. Filled with touching details, Vesperbild portrays Mary’s grief. This statue measures 37 x 36 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. (94 x 92.7 x 39.4 cm), and weighs 250 lbs. Dating to roughly AD 1420, Vesperbild would have been placed in a church in Steiermark, Austria, where it was made. (According to the museum website, the word vesperbild is German for pietà, which is the Italian title for this scene, whether it appears in a painting or sculpture.) A purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund, accession number 1971.67, it can be viewed at the Cleveland Museum of Art German and Austrian Gothic gallery 111. The image is in the public domain. www.clevelandart.org/art/1971.67
