Worksop East Signal Box Track Diagram

I visited this box on 30 July 1967. It was the only box I went in that day, see my "boxes visited" log

Levers 7 and 8 gave releases to the Worksop Station Ground Frame. A photo of a 1960s Track Diagram for that GF is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52630733718/in/album-...

Dates:

c1880 - You'd think that for a listed structure some research would be findable, stating an exact box opening date, but no, best effort is c1880! MS&L type 2 box.

1974 (later in year) - Frame renewed with 2nd hand frame from closed 19 May 1974 Boston Sleaford Junction box. That box was originally 70 levers reduced to 20 levers on 12 November 1972, those 20 levers moved to Worksop East, see drawing of 1976 diagram here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52629736567/in/album-...

1978 (early) - Control area extended to control points and signals previously worked by Manton Wood box, TCB to Thrumpton panel (see drawing of layout here) www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52630254126/in/album-...

19 May 1986 - Became a Grade II listed building.

29 November 1997 - Worksop resignalling stage 1 - which didn't involve Worksop East, but the new Worksop box was intended to be sited on the same side of line but opposite side of road. The location was changed to be at opposite end of Up Platform which caused a delay later at Worksop East because of need to provide CCTV equipment to work the level crossing. See additional information about this from Peter Churchman, further below.

25 May 1998 - Worksop stage 4 - Worksop East becomes TCB fringe box to Worksop from Sheffield direction. Crossover had to be temporarily clipped out of use due to it being within the overlap of WE4 signal.

16 August 1998 - Worksop stage 5 - final stage, Worksop East was downgraded to a Gate Box - See drawing here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52629736557/in/album-...

Peter tells me "With regard to the 1997/8 Worksop resignalling, the work was carried out as part of RT-LNE Zone’s ‘EROS’ strategy, when Charles Weightman was Zone Signal Engineer, and therefore played a major part in its detail.

I remember Charles telling me that it had been their intention to site the new Worksop box at the L.C. end of the stn, and work the LC as MCB.

However (IIRC) English Heritage then complained that the proposed modern structure placed there would badly impact the view from Carlton Rd of the Grade 1 listed stn buildings...

Surprisingly maybe, RT must have been sympathetic, as an almost 11th-hour decision was taken to re-site the box to the opposite corner of the stn, which then required CCTV operation of the LC.

As time was then needed for re-design to MCB-CCTV (plus installation and testing etc), in the interim, Worksop East was retained as GB to operate LC from 17 August 1998."

10 October 1999 - the Level Crossing became a CCTV crossing, controlled from Worksop Signal Box. The WON covering that can be seen, starting here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52630693520/in/album-...

Actually, to date, the box is technically still operational because it contains the Local Control Unit for the barriers which can be used if there is a CCTV failure or during engineering works.

The quite accurate location of the box was 458638 (Easting) 379710 (Northing), seen here on the NLS maps maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.0&lat=5...

A more detailed 25 inch to the mile map is here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.0&lat=5...
