I visited this box on 5 August 1967. I visited 2 boxes that day, see my "boxes visited" log.

Box story:

16 August 1877 - A box already existed here.

10 October 1887 - Replacement box.

27 November 1927 - This replacement box (LMS).

1941 - Track Circuit "10224" installed as part of the work to provide rail connections into the Queniborough Munitions Factory. That involved the provision of Queniborough Signal Box, which was a wartime ARP blast proof concrete and brick box. The block section beyond signal 12 to Queniborough's home signal was fully track circuited.

5 December 1968 - After the through route from Nottingham to London via Old Dalby was closed, the main line from Nottingham, at Melton Junction, became the branch and the branch to Leicester became the main line. However, it was Up to Leicester whereas the other way was Up to Melton, Manton and Peterborough or London via Glendon. So, to avoid the line direction change at Melton Junction box, they changed Up to Down & Down to Up between Melton Jn and Syston South Junction and also Syston North Junction. This meant altering the Box Diagrams and swapping over or renewing many of the lever description plates, re-writing box instructions, etc, in the boxes at Melton Junction, Frisby, Queniborough, this box Syston East Jn, Syston South Jn and Syston North Jn.

Between 1967 and 1971 - 2nd Home signal 13 abolished and 1st home signal 14 renumbered 13.

2 September 1973 - Box closed and junction worked by motor points from Syston South Junction box - strangely keeping semaphore signalling at the East Junction!

There is a poor quality 1949 SBD, electronically enhanced, but clear enough to see the later removed connections.

The quite accurate location of the box was 462174 (Easting) 311872 (Northing), seen here on the NLS maps maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.0&lat=5...

(On the map, though, it must be showing one of the previous boxes, on the opposite side of the lines.)

A more detailed 25 inch to the mile map is here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.0&lat=5...
