At the end of the box you can see the indicator referred to in the box Special Instructions (first paragraph of OTHER INSTRUCTIONS, see here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52439548991/in/album-...)
The indicator in my photo was worked by East Box and probably says "DOWN DISTANT ON". Owen recalls some discussion about the indicators being at the end of the box where you're looking to send a train to and most likely at the opposite end of the frame from the signal lever you're waiting to pull when the indicator drops. That seems to be the case here.
Owen has also heard that some signalmen put tins on the indicators which fell off when they moved, so that they didn't have to keep looking!
