I remember one of the occasions I visited this box, I think it would have been my first visit in December 1965. By the time I was ready to cycle home it was dark and I was offered a lift in a brake van which was about to be taken from the sidings back to Kirkby-in-Ashfield. It was a really great experience - the engine was a Stanier 8F 2-8-0. The glow from the firebox lighting up the footplate as the engine made its way up the gradient was a wonderful sight. The driver stopped at Kirkby Station platform for me to remove my bike and I got back home a lot sooner than if I'd pedalled my way back, plus I didn't have to try to cycle up Church Hill at Kirkby!!
Dates:
1874 - Block telegraph working introduced.
Before 11 November 1875 - First box opened named "Sleights Sidings South".
1876 - Renamed "Sleights Sidings West". Peter Churchman has sent me his diagram conjecture derived from the 1883 locking figures, that can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52439547201/in/album-...
1 May 1904 - New replacement box (this). This later box was never known as "South", it was West from the day it opened in 1904 until it closed 1968. The new West box (1904) was relocated approx 140yards to the north of the old box location.
8 December 1968 - Box closed.
I've included a drawing which Owen copied from mine some 54 odd years ago. He never redrawn it but he added some information to it that has been discovered over the intervening years. It can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52440070028/in/album-...
