Shipley Gate Signal Box Track Diagram_1959

This is a 1959 diagram, courtesy The Midland Railway Study Centre Derby.

The Colliery Branch seen at the bottom of the diagram (points 17) was for Eastwood Colliery which I believe had long closed by the time of that SBD and was just a long storage siding - Owen has some scribble "80 wagons".

(Eastwood Colliery was also served from GN at Newthorpe & Greasley box on the Pinxton Branch).

In this 1967 colour photo you can see the lifted Eastwood Colliery Branch going off behind the box:

Previously, during 1940 to 1950s four other levers were additionally in use, with the colliery branch going over the level crossing and ended at a Ground Frame 14 release. Signal 20/points 21 were a slip connection off crossover 23 from the Colliery Branch protected by signal 19 from Colliery.

The layout can be seen here added onto the 1959 diagram here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52338212735/in/album-...

The Woodside Colliery in Shipley Park, which closed in the 1960s, was connected into the Down Sidings - accessed via 16 Bolt-Lock points, you could not run directly onto MR from it.

A spur from that branch also passed under the MR to the canal wharf. That is the bridge utilised to divert the road under the railway in February 1970 thus eliminating the need for the level crossing.

Part of the area of the old Woodside Colliery was turned into the American Adventure Theme Park which opened in 1987. I took my son & daughter there in 1991 and my photo of them on the balloon ride, along with our French exchange student, can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52380380715/in/album-...

For those of you interested in a potted history about the Theme Park there's a 24 minute YouTube video which is worth watching here www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=LwV3VWBnpDU
