Pye Bridge Junction Signal Box Track Diagram

I visited this box on 30 December 1965. I visited 2 boxes that day, see my "boxes visited" log.

The other box I visited that day was Sleights West. I remember the signalman there ringing Pye Bridge Junction box to see if I could visit.

Pye Bridge Junction was the first box I went in where a booking lad was on duty.

Historical stuff:

This was the second box on this site, 8 May 1892. It then had a new frame on 8 March 1896 and another on 16 September 1900. With 2 frame renewals it would point to the box needing to be extended but not sure about that?

This appears to have been one of the very few boxes not replaced under the 1900s quadrupling works.

As with a lot of embankment boxes it was "raised" in 31 May 1908.

After my visit 39 and 40 were removed 28 May 1967.

A short while later (exact date unknown), as part of Trent resignalling prep work, all Economical Facing Point Locks (EFPL) were replaced with separate levers for FPL because it was easier to convert to motor operation - so lever 39 was reutilised as FPL to 25.

Also 38 slip crossover was taken out and replaced with a crossover in Slow (later Goods) lines just south of 25 points.

The box closed on 11/12 October 1969 in stage 2A of the Trent resignalling see here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51760217501/in/album-...

The BR LMR Signalling Notice 2810 G has some omissions. Owen Llewellyn has produced a fact sheet which gives an overview of the various stage changes. It can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51760197211/in/album-...

The junction points no. 37, on the Up Branch from Kirkby, are memorialised in Dave Goulder's song "The day we run away". Dave was a fireman at Kirkby-in-Ashfield shed and the song recounts one of his experiences.

I really enjoyed listening to Dave sing some of his songs (including that one) at the "Singing the Steam" concert at the Bentinck Miners Welfare, Kirkby-in-Ashfield on 10 July 2022 (my ticket is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52217608419/in/album-...)

Afterwards I was pleased to confirm with Dave that the junction mentioned in the lyrics was indeed at Pye Bridge, as was the Station.

There's a YouTube video of the song here, the reference to the Junction is at 2 mins 29 secs.

That song, and some of Dave's others, were released on a BBC LP in 1969, sung by Brett Stevens. The LP was titled "Green All The Way: Songs & Sounds Of The Railways" and I own a copy.
