Nottingham Victoria North Signal Box Track Diagram
I visited this box (I believe) on 25 August 1966. I visited 2 boxes that day, see my "boxes visited" log.

I think I made an error in my "boxes visited" log. It shows different dates for Vic North & South boxes but I know they were on the same day. 25th August 1966 was a Thursday and I think that would have been the day, rather than a Friday.

I was aware that things were changing. Although I'd been interested in railways from an early age, the opportunities to travel by rail were limited. As regards the GC line my only travels were in January and February 1963 when, with my brother Gordon and our friend Stuart Bellamy, we went twice from Kirkby Bentinck to Sheffield Victoria for train spotting. Timely indeed because that service was axed with effect from 4 March 1963. So, in August 1966, I knew that the last remaining passenger train from Sheffield Victoria was to cease from 5 September. I decided to experience the journey before it was too late. I went by bus to Alfreton station where I caught a DMU to Sheffield Midland. I crossed the City to catch 1042, the 08:30 Newcastle to Poole train, seen in the Working Timetable here www.flickr.com/photos/mrc31176/51068203847/in/album-72157...
We always knew the train as the York-Bournemouth but in Summer 1966 it started from Newcastle. The south end destination switched to Poole at the start of the winter 1965/66 timetable with closure of Bournemouth West station.
It was hauled by a Brush type 4, the number of which I didn't record. Before passing Kirkby South Junction I went to one of the doors and let down the window to give a pre-arranged wave to my Signalman friend there. Before long we had emerged from the gloom of Mansfield Road tunnel into the cavernous Nottingham Victoria station. My journey home was to be by bus but I decided to ask the Station staff if they thought I could visit the Signal Boxes. This was organised and so I went into both North and South boxes.
The box was originally called just "Nottingham North"
Assumed opened with line 27 May 1898 but the station construction was not complete until May 1900?
RSCo 5.5" tappet frame as was most of London Extension boxes.
Closed 3 September 1967 with the station as the last passenger service to Rugby was cut back to a reopened Arkwright Street station.
There then followed 9 months of demolition and moving tracks to the east side of the station site, construction of Victoria Centre starting and then a short notice decision was made to close the line.
Although I didn't go into the Platform East or Platform West boxes it will be useful, for completeness, to include diagrams of those boxes here:
