Nottingham Victoria East_1960
I didn't visit this box but it's included for completeness.
The box was built into the end of one of the blocks of station offices on the platforms.
The lever frame was at right angles to the track and as such when Owen and Peter first saw plans they assumed the diagram would be drawn vertically as they had seen on other boxes around the region with frames at right angles.
It transpires, though, that the diagram was almost certainly drawn with horizontal tracks.
Owen, though, is happy with his vertical version and has not redrawn it. I am pleased that he gave me permission to incorporate it.
The East box was a main line box, controlling Up & Down Mains and also Up Loops (But not Up Goods). Its odd size lever frame of 36 levers is because at 5.5" centres it only just fitted into the width of the building, so close to the walls that levers 1 and 36 were unuseable. Tallying up the necessary block instruments also meant the blockshelf was rammed full with all instruments just squeezed in.
East, being a main line box, had a door directly onto the platform.
Closure dates of the box are shrouded in mystery.
With the run down of passenger services it was probably of not much use after the September 1964 holiday traffic had finished and Derby Friargate trains withdrawn.
There is a much quoted date of 11 November 1966 when it is believed the box switched out late evening as normal and then it was never reopened.
The official closure date however is:
3 September 1967 - East box closed - same date as North and South.
That date, when quoted though, has a rider "Out of use for some time beforehand"!
There is a photo, courtesy of the Charles Weightman and Alan Bullimore Collection, part of the excellent "Tillyweb" website. tillyweb.biz/index.htm The photo can be seen here:
