Some historical information:

Line opened 1 October 1881 with a "Newstead North" box at north end of Up platform and a "Newstead South" box near to the crossover.

Both were replaced by the LNER in 1926 (exact date not known) by this box, quite probably as a direct result of the Board of Trade relaxation of permitted distance to rod work mechanical points to 350 yards in 1925.

In 1926 there were additionally a couple of connections from the Down Headshunt and Coal Line to the Down Main, a trailing connection in the Up Main to a siding behind the box and another crossover at north end of the platforms near the turntable points.

After my visit, and before closure, the turntable line was taken out and 27/28/31 became spare. Having a starter and an advanced starter was an unnecessary luxury so 19 was made spare at Newstead and the signals then just became Annesley Junction's Down Homes, with a real block section from Newstead Down Starter 18. By this time Annesley North Junction would be closed so Annesley Junction had no slots left on any of its signals.

The level crossing levers at Newstead all became spare (32/33/34), with the road gates padlocked and the wickets left free.
