Morton Sidings Signal Box Track Diagram

I visited this box on 2 June 1966. It was the only box I went in that day, see my "boxes visited" log

A photo of an earlier track diagram dated 13 April 1951, from my collection of original Track Diagrams, can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52078386572/in/album-...

There was an accident around here on 12 February 1929 in which, sadly, a Driver and Fireman died. The Primary cause was attributed to the Signalman but, as happens quite often in these cases, three other people, Driver, Fireman or Guard could have noticed something was wrong. Additionally, it highlights the benefit of the interlocking protection afforded by shunt signal no. 25, had the Signalman tried to clear the signal.

The accident report can be seen in the Railways Archive here www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/eventsummary.php?eventID=568

A 2 chain map relating to the collision is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52079993410/in/album-...

That has been downloaded courtesy The Midland Railway Study Centre Derby. The Item number is 88-2012-134/04, searchable here www.midlandrailwaystudycentre.org.uk/catalogue.php

Note: On my SBD the position of no. 25 signal is not where it was at the time of the accident - see my 1951 original diagram to understand where no. 25 signal had been previously sited.

Some history:

3rd box on this site

Box 1 opened 1873-1876.

Box 2 opened 6 January 1895.

Box 3 (this) opened 28 July 1901 when the route was made 4 tracks, MR 6" tumbler frame.

The 1902 inspection plan is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52079433918/in/album-... and the locking plan is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52078386632/in/album-...

To the north Morton Sidings worked to Danesmoor Sidings until that box closed 23 January 1966. It then worked to Clay Cross South Junction because Coney Green Sidings had closed 22 March 1964.

To the south it was working to Doe Hill until that closed 28 March 1965. It then worked to Tibshelf South Junction (as per at time of my visit) until that closed 20 November 1966 to then work to Westhouses Station.

When Doe Hill closed Morton Sidings took over control of its colour light Up Passr Starter as its own Up Advance Passr Starter (38). It also gained the Shell-Mex Ground Frame (28) which was at Doe Hill.

This Advance Passr Starting signal was Red to Yellow by Morton Sidings 38, but Yellow to Green was a little more complex - it was Tibshelf South Junction Up Passr Distant but was also slotted by Westhouse Station as its Up Passr Outer Distant, but Westhouses Up Passr Distant lever was underbolted by Blackwell South Junction Up Passr Distant, so when it was green you had a clear run to Alfreton.

All Up side and Down side sidings were removed 7 May 1967 and the remaining track layout modified as per the 1969 plan to be operational from 20 October 1968 in preparation for Trent resignalling www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52079912495/in/album-...

On Wednesday 8 October 1969 the following lines were taken out of use: Up & Down Goods between here and Clay Cross North Junction and also Down Goods from Blackwell South Junction. This gave track engineers 5 days to install the new double Goods to Main junction at Coney Green which would be worked by Trent from Sunday 12 October 1969. The Up Goods to Blackwell South Junction would become a bidirectional single Up & Down goods line under Trent.

The box closed on 11/12 October 1969 in stage 2A of the Trent resignalling see here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51760217501/in/album-...

The BR LMR Signalling Notice 2810 G has some omissions. Owen Llewellyn has produced a fact sheet which gives an overview of the various stage changes. It can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51760197211/in/album-...

I didn't take any photos of the box. Owen, however, has let me use an Instamatic colour shot he took, he thinks, probably in the closure week www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52079660349/in/album-...

There's a B&W photo of the box listed in the The Midland Railway Study Centre Derby catalogue. The Item number is 63815, searchable here www.midlandrailwaystudycentre.org.uk/catalogue.php

The quite accurate location of the box was 441444 (Easting) 360604 (Northing), seen here on the NLS maps maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=53....
