This shows colour light signal no. 11 with sub no. 2 below, still in use. Note the long hoods provided on the sub signal. The photo also shows that, for some locos, taking water would mean drawing past the signal. The sub signal no. 2 could allow this if the train wasn't yet signalled for departure through to Goods North and beyond.
Pete informed me that signal no. 11, despite appearing to be a 2 aspect signal, was actually a four aspect signal - the upper lens was a single yellow, while the lower lens was a single lens, 3 aspect searchlight signal; it was thus capable of showing Red, single Yellow, double Yellow or Green.
