Mansfield Station Train Register Book - Unusual Events
UNUSUAL EVENTS
This shows two instances where adjacent boxes have closed (switched out) but the Signalmen, for whatever reason, didn't clear the signals.
Sun 18 Mar 1951: Sutton-in-Ashfield Central Station box had closed at 4.45pm and Kirkby-in-Ashfield Central Station box had closed at 4.53pm. A light engine was offered on the Down from Kirkby South Junction at 5.30pm. The entry then reads "Driver of above reported signals at danger at Sutton. Advised to proceed at caution". The next Up entry is for a local passenger train (371) starting from Mansfield (it had previously arrived, as Train 170 at 2.43pm). It reads "above advised to proceed cautiously to Kirkby". www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52066704053/in/album-...
Thurs 10 May 1951: Mansfield Colliery Sidings box had closed at 9.47pm. At 10:58pm the Up entry reads "Informed by Control that 1231 standing at Colly outer home with signals at danger. Driver advised by me to approach here at caution" and then "arrangements for pulling signals off made between Control & C.S" (Concentration Sidings). On the Down an entry reads "advised by C.S. Colly signals off 1145". www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52065646357/in/album-...
Syd Hancock took a great photo of Mansfield Colliery Signal Box, it can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/sydhank/8011867780/in/photolist-2cq...
There's another unusual event I'd like to include. It doesn't feature in the TRB, It's one Owen has told me about:
An Annesley fireman recalls:-
Mansfield GC Station, yeah I remember that place, it was just after I'd started and I think it was Christmas Eve.
My driver said we have to take a train from Annesley to Mansfield Conc, so off we set.
We got to Mansfield Station and the signalman stopped us and said that they couldn't take us into Conc just yet so we got looped (set back into Down Siding) and there we stood and waited.
After an hour or so my driver says "I'm going up the box to see what's happening".
A short while later he returns, "Box is locked and switched out, signalman's gone, we've been forgotten about! Give me your coal hammer, I'll have to sort this"!
Off he went and smashed his way into the box to then get on the phone.
About an hour later somebody turned up and let us go on our way to Conc. several hours later than we should have.
