Kirkby South Junction - Fish train 1272

Photo by Frank Ashley from a print Frank processed for me.

B1 4-6-0 no. 61209 pilots K3 2-6-0 no. 61825 past Kirkby South Junction on the main line from Killamarsh in June 1956. This train would be 1272, the 1.04 pm New Clee to Banbury. I'm not sure at that time if the train went right through to Whitland but it certainly would have gone further than Banbury and would no doubt had gone into Marston Sidings near Swindon where some re-marshalling would have been carried out.

Double headers were always an impressive sight but, in this case, the additional pilot engine was not required to give the extra power - it was a way of returning an engine back to Annesley shed, thus saving a path.

61209 was allocated to Annesley from March 1948 to Oct 1956.

Through my research into the fish trains I was puzzled about why this train was routed via the Waleswood Curve at Killamarsh Junction, rather than via Lincoln and Mansfield. The answer lies in the WTT I purchased in March 2022 - that shows the train was booked to stop at Gainsborough Central for 34 minutes.
