Mansfield South Junction Signal Box Track Diagram

I first visited this box on 19 January 1966. It was the only box I went in that day, see my "boxes visited" log

A photo of an earlier track diagram dated 14 August 1951, from my collection of original Track Diagrams, can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52031297025/in/album-...

Dates and other information.

The Branch opened and then closed 1872, an 1883 inspection track plan shows it as a siding. (According to the later 1906 Board of Trade inspection it was used as a carriage siding.)

This is backed up by the 25 inch OS map, seen here with the Branch not connected at East Junction maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17&lat=53....

As with North Junction there was a box existing at Mansfield South Junction before 1 November 1875.

1882 - Some sort of Engine Shed existed before 1882 but it was replaced in 1882.

20 January 1895 - This replacement box opened.

28 January 1906 - New lever frame, this is also the re-opening date of the South Junction to East Junction line.

9 March 1906 - Inspection track plan drawing also states the box was extended. The facing lead 17/18 was also new. To facilitate this, the box was extended (north end) to accommodate a new 36 lever frame. See here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52031653039/in/album-...

Circa 1948 - T.C. 2077 is installed, suspect this will have also been when the outer home (2) was added.

Prior to this, 1+4 were Down splitting distants, 2+5 Down homes, & 3 Down starting.

A diagram circa 1950 is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52043266527/in/album-...

1951 - My 1951 SBD is interesting in that it shows points 22 connected to the Up Main and not into the Branch with double slip www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52031297025/in/album-...

11 April 1960 - Engine Shed closed (points taken out 1963). A good photo of the shed, taken circa 1955, can be seen here

At an unknown date in 1963 the up lie-bye & engine shed points were taken out. Also in 1963 the junction layout was altered, replacing the orig slip connection with a facing crossover.

11 December 1966 Mansfield East Junction box closed and the Tyer's No 6 Tablet machine (which had pattern 'C' tablets, with a triangular centre cut-out) from the East box was transferred to South Junction. The tablets were amended by stamping to make validity between Mansfield Colliery Junction and Mansfield South Junction.

My photo of the 'C' pattern Tablet machine in the South box is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52054428590/in/album-...

28 November 1970 - Kings Mill siding out of use.

15 October 1983 - Box and Branch closed (On this date the branch was only to Rufford Colliery Sidings with Mansfield Colliery Junction as an intermediate box).

I have produced a mini-album which gives information about the single line working in the Mansfield area. This can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/albums/72177720298676265
