Dates.....

There seems to be confusion as to what date the line actually opened. The line was inspected 22 February 1871 and fully opened for traffic on 3 April 1871, from the Farnsfield direction to Mansfield North Junction. This is supported by the 23 July 1895 MR diagram showing the Mansfield North & Farnsfield Train Staff and Key here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52031918720/in/album-...

The chord to Mansfield South Junction is listed by John Gough as approved on 12 March 1872, and closing in 1872. Then re-opened for goods on 28 January 1906.

There was therefore no signal box at East Junction when the line opened from Mansfield North to Farnsfield. An 1883 inspection track plan shows it as a siding, supported by the OS 25 inch map here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=53....

28 January 1906 - This box opened, inspected 9 March 1906, line to South Junction re-opened 28 January 1906.

Two diagrams are here:

30 November 1913 - John Gough says Signal Box raised. This ‘raising’ will refer to repairs following subsidence – boxes such as Mansfield East Junction, built on embankments, were particularly prone to gradual slippage.

28 November 1965 - the line to North Junction reduced in status to "Through Siding".

11 December 1966 - Box closed, line to North Junction severed (Due to condition of Maun Viaduct).

When the box closed the Tyer's No 6 Tablet machine for the Section Mansfield Colliery Junction to Mansfield East Junction (which had pattern 'C' tablets, with a triangular centre cut-out) was transferred to Mansfield South Junction box. The tablets were amended by stamping to make validity between Mansfield Colliery Junction and Mansfield South Junction.

My photo of that 'C' pattern Tablet machine in South box is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52054428590/in/album-...

I have produced a mini-album which gives information about the single line working in the Mansfield area. This can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/albums/72177720298676265

The quite accurate location of the box was 453630 (Easting) 360144 (Northing), seen here on the NLS maps maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=53....

A more detailed 25 inch to the mile map is here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=53....

This map (dated 1892-1914) actually shows the South to East line as not being connected to the Mansfield North to Southwell line.
