Langwith Colliery Sidings Signal Box Track Diagram

I visited this box on 2 July 1966. I visited 8 boxes that day, see my "boxes visited" log.

This box had a story, for a small box a long story too, much of it happening the year after my visit!

The lever frame was total 15 levers (A,B,1-13) plus a block shelf mounted Westinghouse Style D single lever power frame slide, lettered "Z", which operated the "Down Elmton South Intermediate Block Signal". It was added during 1946 when all other levers in the frame were in use, within a year or so 4 of those levers became spare but the unusual slide was retained.

Box story.....

Before 1 October 1876 - First box at this site is noted as being there and was there before this date.

During 1880 - Renamed "Langwith Colliery Sidings North" - because the "Langwith Colliery Sidings South" box opened. There's an old photo of the South box here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51987910138/in/album-...

31 January 1897 - This box opened, a replacement 2nd box on this site - 12 levers - MR 6" tumbler frame.

11 May 1916 - Levers A & B added (to make 14 levers) for new WW1 "Perchlorate" Siding. See Inspecting Officer's notebook plan www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51981160491/in/album-...

22 March 1942 - South box closed, this box renamed back to "Langwith Colliery Sidings". Previous spare (6) used for South GF release, Up Starter provided so lever functions shuffled along and a new lever "13" added for Up Distant (Now 15 levers).

28 April 1946 - Elmton & Creswell resignalling scheme - new box there. New "Down Elmton South" Intermediate Block Signal provided, no spare levers so the Westinghouse Slide "Z" fitted to operate it.

Before/during 1952 - Connections and signals A&B plus 4&5 removed.

9 January 1967 - New Norwood Chord opened to divert Killamarsh direction LDECR line into Midland line near Norwood Crossing thus allowing LDECR route to be breached south of Spink Hill for M1 construction. The Department for Transport paid for this work so you would have thought BR would have squeezed a new box out of it, but instead it was controlled from this box with minimal signalling using three of the four spare levers in the frame. Absolute Block on the new chord line, but slotted signals both ways, to LDECR Langwith Colliery Junction signal box. See diagram here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51975190094/in/album-...

27 May 1968 - GNR Leen Valley Extension line to Langwith Junction closed - Reduced traffic on new Chord line.

6 June 1971 - Langwith Colliery Junction LDECR signal box closed, Absolute Block working now to Langwith Junction box. Note the down line was track circuited from Langwith Junction Down Starter to allow Train out of Section for trains not seen.

11 November 1974 - Chord line closed - Bridge at Langwith Junction unsafe so new chord line constructed at Shirebrook worked by Shirebrook Junction box.

16 February 1975 - Block shelf mounted slide "Z" removed, IB signal worked by lever 4. See diagram here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/51974907596/in/album-...

There was a derailment in March/April 1981 which sealed the fate of the box, see here www.flickr.com/photos/16418497@N03/6253057637

16 May 1981 - Box closed.
