Annesley South Junction_1954

This 1954 track diagram shows Annesley South Junction box having a total of 40 levers with 24 working. On the main line the box worked to Annesley North and Hucknall Central. Into Annesley Yard the box worked to Annesley No.4 via the Down and Up Goods Line. There was also an Up Engine Line from No.4 which had the intermediate Up Yard South Shunter's Cabin Ground Frame controlling the passage from the Up Engine Line and the Up Sidings onto Annesley South Junction box. Interesting to note are the two accelerating distant signals on the Up Goods out of Annesley Yard (nos 37 & 38). Hopefully you will be aware of the "Annesley runners" which included loose coupled freight trains. On these trains drivers needed to carefully manage their speed according to the signals. The exit from Annesley yard was curved so, under normal circumstances, the aspect of the signal into the section ahead wouldn't be visible. However these accelerating distants, when cleared, gave the drivers the knowledge that the road ahead was clear to the signals of the next box, Hucknall Central.
