Three - pronged Vajra Pestle is from Japan during the Kamakura period and was created in the early 1300s. It is made out of gilt bronze. According to the museum, a pestle like this would have been used during esoteric Buddhist rituals and was made to symbolically resemble the lightening bolt used by the Vedic god Indra. The pestle measures, 17.5cm long and 5cm wide. Three - pronged Vajra Pestle was a gift from Dr. Richard G. Paley; the accession number is 1974.264. This item is part of the Japanese Art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art but it is not currently on view. The image is in the public domain.
