This piece is called “Demon in Chains”. It was created by painting opaque watercolor and gold onto paper. Overall the dimensions are 10 ⅝ x 13 ⅞ in. or 27 x 35.2 cm. It was created in Iran or Central Asia during the Timurid or Turkoman Period sometime in 1453. It is the Iranian artist, Muhammad Siya’s style, and the type of work is a manuscript. According to the museum, the woman in the picture is depicted to look just as evil like the demon, div. Perhaps this is to show that men are viewed as civil beings while women are still “wild”. This piece belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, but unfortunately, is not on display. The credit line is the Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund and the accession number is 1982.63.
