Torso of a Woman - 1927.383_web

This piece is called “Torso of a Woman” and it was created by what seemed to be endlessly sculpting away at marble until it created a smooth surface. Overall, the dimensions of the figure are 15 3/4 x 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. or 40 x 19.1 x 12.1 cm. It was created between 100 BC to 400 AD but could even be more modern (perhaps before 1927). It belongs to Italy, Rome and one can tell by the realistic features of the nude female body. According to the museum, this sculpture was likely a depiction of Aphrodite or is somehow related to the beautiful goddess. The style of sculpture was very popular and was used for centuries after which is why the origins are left unknown. This piece can be viewed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 003 Special Exhibition Hall - 15. The credit line is from the Gift of Mrs. George D. Pratt and the accession number is 1927.383. This image is public domain.
