Terracotta cinerary urn 96.9.220a, b

This piece is called “Terracotta Cinerary Urn” and it was created by molding and sculpting away at terracotta.The dimensions of this extravagant piece (which includes the lid) are 13 3/4 x 13 3/4 x 8 in. or 35 x 34.9 x 20.3 cm. It was created in the 2nd century B.C. during the Hellenistic Period. According to the museum, It can be recognized as an Etruscan piece because of the depiction of a hero fighting with a plow. There are many urns that were created in this period in order to protect the person who has passed. Many times, such as this one, the name of the family or person is inscribed onto it. This one reads, “ARNTILE . AFUNAS . LAUTNI” which in English translates to “Arntile, freedman of the Afuna family”. This piece can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in gallery 170.
