Relief of Hermes and Ares - 1927.436_web

This beautiful and dramatic relief is called “Relief of Hermes and Ares”. This piece was created by chiseling and sculpting away at limestone. Overall, this sculpture is 12 ⅞ in or 32.7 cm and it weighs about 26 lbs. or 11.793kg. It was created in Greece in the 200s BC during the 3rd century period. According to the museum, this is a fine example of “Hellenistic interest in violent motion”. When viewing the relief, one can see how the piece is full of movement and looks as if Aries and Hermes are fleeing and fighting off whatever is behind them. It is also interesting to look at how fluid but bold the sculpture is. This can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art in section 102C Greek. It was purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund 1927.436. This image is public domain.
