Cleveland Museum of Art: The Moon-Viewing Promontory, from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo

This piece by Utagawa Hiroshige is from Japan in 1857. It is made of color on a woodblock print. It is at the Cleveland Museum of Art from The Kelvin Smith Collection, given by Mrs. Kelvin Smith. The image is in public domain. I was drawn to the contemporary feeling of this piece instantly and was shocked to find it is from 1857. The textural flatness, solid color, and simple line work in the focal point of the piece really interested me. There is more detail and color gradient in the dreamlike view outside of the window. I liked the mysterious silhouette that appears to be behind a room divider. This is also very strange, as the full figure is not in view. The strange blocking and minimal features seem to draw the viewer even more toward the calm nighttime scene outside.
