Cleveland Museum of Art: Pair of Figures
According to the museum, these are presumed to be from the 1900s from the Guinea Coast. These are part of a set and the materials consist of wood and paint. These were a gift of Harry W. Langworthy and are not on view. I love the shapes of these painted wooden figures- the long legs and short, round arms are very stylized. They each have closed eyes- the figure on the right wearing a very peaceful and serene expression while the figure on the left appears neutral. The painted markings on the bodies have worn- but the figure on the left appears to have a snake pattern wrapped around the body.
