Cleveland Museum of Art: Pendant Face in Crescent

According to the museum, this piece is presumed to be from the 1900s from the. Guinea Coast. This pendant is made of gold and is sized at 7 x 7.4 cm. This piece is from the John L. Severance Fund and located at 108C, Akan & Yoruba. The museum also states that pendants such as this one were presumed to be used in funerals, often laid in front of the corpse before burial. I think this gold work is stunning and think it is fascinating that such intricate works were used to adorn the bodies of deceased loved ones- a symbol of both adoration and mourning.
