Updraft lightning behind the mountain

Updraft lightning is the development of a self-propagating bolt of lightning from a tall object moving upward toward the overhead thundercloud. This type of lightning can occur without any prior lightning activity. This is classified as self-initiated upward lightning.

 

A tall object locally amplifies the electric field, resulting in favorable conditions for initiating an upward lightning bolt.
