NGC7023 The Iris Nebula

This is a reflection nebula, which is a cloud of interstellar gas and dust illuminated by the bright central star. The bluish tint is caused by Rayleigh scattering of photons (light) from tiny dust particles. This is the same process that makes the Earth’s sky blue.

 

There are several dark nebulae visible in the image, these are cool dense clouds of gas and dust.
