M 106 / NGC 4258
An intermediate spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus of Seyfert type 2. The galaxy lies at a distance of about 24 million light years. It contains a supermassive black hole with a mass of around 40 million Suns and a galactic scale water microwave laser (maser). It was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Méchain.
