Alms Bowl with Celestial Design

This bronze bowl is adorned with a simple landscape and originates from Korea during either the Late Unified Silla Period (6th-9th century) or the Goryeo Period (9th to 14th). The bowl is believed to have been created with a greater ritual purpose in mind rather than as a mere begging bowl. The constellation of the Big Dipper can be discerned in the background. The bowl was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1986 and its image is in the public domain.
