The Flagellation, from a Mirror of Holiness (Mir’at al-quds) of Father Jerome Xavier

Opaque watercolor, ink, pigment, and gold on paper, the work of Father Jerome Xavier, S.J., grand-nephew of the famous missionary St. Francis Xavier, S.J. Produced between 1602-1604, the "Mir'at al-quds" [Mirror of Holiness] appears to have been an attempt by Father Jerome Xavier to convert members of the Mughal Court. Muslims themselves, the Mughal royalty such as Prince Salim would have been somewhat familiar with the Passion narrative of Jesus Christ, here depicted being scourged by Roman soldiers before the Crucifixion. The sheet measures 10 5/16 x 6 in. and originates from Allahabad. It can be seen on the Cleveland Museum of Art website but is not currently on display. The object is part of a set and was purchased in 2005 through the John L. Severance Fund. The image is in the Public Domain.
