Agricultural Figurine

Made of cast silver, this figure depicts a man or deity holding ears of maize and who appears to have more maize sprouting from his back. The object can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art in their Andean section-232. It is a product of the Inka culture which specialized in cast metal sculpture. The figure here is small, at about 5 x 1.4 cm. and it is quite possible that the object was made after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 15th century AD, but probably dates from around that time or as far back as the 14th century. The figurine was a gift of John Wise and its image is in the Public Domain.
