Prestige Stool (Kuo) 2006.138_web

Prestige stool (Kuo) which is made from wood, cotton, plant fiber, glass beads and indigo is possibly from the 1800's. This stool is from Africa, Central Africa, Cameroon, Bandjoun Kingdom, Bamileke makers, and is currently at the Cleveland Museum of Art and not on view. According to the museum, this was once owned by rulers of Bandjoun Kingdom. The stool is 51 x 38 x 43 cm, this bead covered wooden stool would be a “travel stool,” which would be used with smaller and more private rituals and ceremonies at the palace. According to the museum this stool was once part of the royal treasury, and the leopard holding up the top of the stool and in the middle, would be a sign of its royal status. According to the museum, the leopard is representation that the king could transform into this feared predator.
