lively scenes of the street. Yet the sun, in all its merciless glory, did press upon me so exceedingly that I feared my very frame might dissolve into the dust of the pavement. At length, compelled by necessity, I sought sanctuary within a modest café, wherein the coolness of the air, together with a glass of iced coffee and a portion of sweet bread, did much restore both my spirits and my strength. And it was in that moment of repose that my eye, wandering idly to the opposite window, fell upon a lady of perhaps fifty years, whose quiet composure lent an air of singular dignity to her seat.
