"Lovers (Mithuna) is a sandstone sculpture from India, Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho, Medieval period, Candella dynasty, during the 11th century. It is currently on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in section 244 Indian and Southeast Asian. The sculpture features a man and women embracing each other while their limbs in an unnatural pose. According the museum, erotic imagery was a standard element on sacred monuments in India. Idealized lovers signal the auspiciousness of birth, prosperity of life, and the abundance of the created world, indicating to worshippers at the temple that their offerings and prayers would be fruitful and productive. The sculpt is 74 cm is credited to the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund. The image is in the public domain can be viewed on the museum's website.
