This engraved bamboo container was made in the mid to late 19th century by the Kanak people in New Caledonia. The container is made up of bamboo and appears thick with meaningful symbols engraved all around. According to The Met Museum, the container was used to protect the person holding the object from any harm by carrying blends of plants that were known to be magical.
