Female Figure - 1978.412.857
The female figure was sculpted using wood and was made between the 16th and 19th century. The figure originates from Papua New Guinea and was made by the Inyai-Ewa people. It is 67 inches tall and 16 1/2 inches wide. According to the Met Museum, carvings like this one are created in a variety of forms and represent many different supernatural beings. When looking deeper at the details of this piece, I noticed the representation of two bodies. There is one shorter figure, as well as a taller figure. These details are what encouraged me to choose this sculpture. The female figure was purchased by The Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection with the accession number 1978.412.857, and can be seen at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 354. www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/311327
