Pendant: Crocodile - 1952.265_web

This object named Pendant: Crocodile was made in the 20th century in the Guinea Coast, Ivory Coast, and most likely Baule. The pendant is beautifully made with gold and resembles a crocodile measuring at 4.9 centimeters, or 1 15/16 inches. The midsection of this object stood out to me as it includes patterns while the head and tail are simply made with no patterns. In Baule, gold is used at funerals to be laid around the individual before they are buried, as gold is known to be connected with ancestor spirits. The object was purchased by the John L. Severance Fund with accession number 1952.265. It can be seen on The Cleveland Museum of Art’s website in gallery 108C Akan & Yoruba. clevelandart.org/art/1952.265
