Helmet - 1975.152_web
Helmet, created in the early to mid 20th century, was worn as a representation of when a boy was entering a new age group before entering the Poro society. It contains horns and what appears to be the shape of a face on the left and right side, as well as in the middle. The details on this object is what made it stand out to me. The history of it also intrigued me. This helmet measures at 34.9 centimeters and is made of wood, colorant, and upholstery studs. There is a female on the top that connects to a woman’s supernatural powers of assuring health and wellness to members of Poro. The Helmet was purchased as a gift of Katherine C. White with the accession number 1975.152. It can be seen on The Cleveland Museum of Art’s website in gallery 108A Sub-Saharan. www.clevelandart.org/art/1975.152
