clevelandart.org/art/1988.53

Made in the 1200's during the period of Kamakura, this statue is made with wood with lacquer, polychromy, gold, and crystal eyes having height of 117.2 cms.

Part of the 12 generals in the Japanese Buddhist temple hall named Junishinsho which protects the central icon of the Yakushi Nyorai known as the Healing Buddha. Many thinly carved pieces of wood were joined with the help of a pin and then covered with hemp cloth and lacquer paste and then decorated with pigments. The eyes were made of crystals and painted for detailing work. The tremendous increase in the religious sites across Japan especially Kyoto, made the sculpture creators busy in making the religious statues and figures.
